Kicking Off the New School Year

Posted August 23, 2023

Hello East Angels Families!

It’s time…the first official day is upon us.  We are looking forward to having a great school year!  As we begin this journey together, there are a couple of things we want to share with you.  Over the next few days and weeks we will be providing you with information, details and resources for your family to find as much success as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Student Registration: Every student, new and returning, is required to register for school every year . If you have not completed registration yet, please visit the DPS Registration website and register immediately.  If you are new to DPS, a foreign exchange student or you received an offer from the waitlist, you will need to come to East to register in-person.  Please see Ms. Catbagan in Room 229 between 8am-3pm (closed for lunch 12pm-1pm). If you have any specific questions, please reach out to our Registrar Yvonne at ysalas@dpsk12.net.

Arrival Times: Students will be able to access the building from the Detroit doors beginning at 7:45am.  At that time, students will be able to use the Commons to wait for the building to open or to eat breakfast.  All doors will open at 8:00am and students will be able to head to their classes, which start at 8:20am. Carla Madison Recreation Center opens at 5:30am and can be a place for students to go before our doors open.

Free Breakfast & Lunch: Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students at no charge, regardless of students free or reduced price meal benefit status; however, it is still very important that families continue to complete the Household Application for Student Meal Benefits to determine lunch eligibility status. Completion of this form results in extra federal funding for our school.

Lunch Return: All students have the privilege of attending lunch off campus.  Lunch begins at 12:05pm and ends at 12:50pm with class starting at 12:55pm.  Students will be expected to return on time for classes after lunch.  Failure to return on time will result in receiving two warnings and the third tardy will result in Saturday school. Saturday School will be held from 8am-12pm at East High School.  Excessive tardiness will result in a mandatory parent conference.

Departure Times: Students will be released from class at 3:35pm (7th period).  The building entrance will close at 4:00pm unless you are involved in an after school activity that is supervised by an adult.

Transportation: Students can ride for free starting Sept. 1 until Aug. 31, 2024. To board the bus or train, students will need to show a form of ID. With the pilot program in place, please note that DPS Transportation will not be providing paper or virtual RTD tickets for the 2023-24 school year.

Student IDs: It is a District and East expectation that students wear their IDs on their necks daily.  As we complete the distribution of IDs through next week, returning students should bring their 22-23 IDs or plan to show their Student Portal landing page upon entry into the building.  Ninth grade students that attended 9th Grade Academy should be wearing their IDs.  Any 9th grade student that does not yet have an ID should plan to show their Student Portal landing page upon entry as well.  By September 1st, all East Angels should have a 23-24 Student ID.

Safety Updates: As we continue to enhance our safety and security measures, we want to communicate several of the measures that will be implemented.

  • We will begin the year with 4 Campus Safety Officers (CSOs)
  • Continuing to build community with our two School Resource Officers (SROs) – Officer Alba and Officer Wolfe
  • The addition of an Assistant Principal position, Brian Edwards, that will primarily focus on climate and safety.
  • Training and implementation of a new safety communication platform – Redbag. We are collaborating with Cherry Creek School District for this new initiative.
  • Conducting a full scale campus site assessment

We are looking forward to opening the school year and continuing the rich tradition and history of East High School. We will keep you informed through our weekly messages and newsletters, so please be on the lookout for them. You will also have the opportunity to engage with all members of our school community at Back to School Night on September 6th at 6:00pm. Please visit the East Website and Social Media pages for upcoming dates and events.

Sincerely,

Terita Walker
