Friday News 4/26

Posted May 24, 2024

Dear Angels Community,

A message from junior student, Jera Bagola:

We painted the E, in honor of missing and murdered indigenous women and relatives. May 5th is the official day of awareness and we are currently planning a rally with speakers to talk about this issue that has been affecting our community. In the painting, we added Ojibwa style flowers as well as red hand prints to signify the relatives that have gone missing or been murdered. This mural is significant to me and my family as I have added the name of my cousin, Trevor James PoorBear, who was murdered earlier this year. This movement is very important to me and other students at East because as indigenous women, we are taught at a very young age that we need to be careful and we need to learn how to protect ourselves because if we don’t, no one else will. MMIWR is just one of the problems that the indigenous community has to go through, but it is important that we have allies and people who understand the significance of this movement in order to create change.

As always, thank you for your support of our East Community and follow our active student body on Instagram @eastangels_madamprincipal and @denvereasths or visit our website for additional information https://east.dpsk12.org/

Teacher Spotlight: Kristy Skarpol

Kristy continues to be one of our kindest most caring staff members and does nothing but amazing work with all of our students. She has helped me reconnect with a student that I have not been able to build any rapport with and because of her we have had some major breakthroughs. She is the best I am so lucky to be able to work with such a fantastic individual!!!

She is an absolutely an amazing math teacher that I have seen connect with some of our school’s most difficult students and has been able to have good relationships and rapport that results in academic results in class. Math is not an easy topic to teach and she is able to get buy-in from her students through empathy and kindness! We need more Skarphols! – Adam Paull

Kristy is always so spirited! She attends all of our pep rallies in her tutu and halo! She is committed to keeping our kids safe by offering a helping-hand during fire and safety protocols. She also gives her full commitment to implementing our cellphone policy. Her presence is felt and valued in our school community. – Terita Walker

Teacher Appreciation week is May 6th through May 10th.

Thank you for your generous donations to the Teacher Appreciation fund. Your support is appreciated.  We have 2 1/2 more weeks to continue to raise money to make this the best week for our Teachers and Staff. Every little bit counts, and together, we can make a difference! All money donated will go towards all the fun events we are planning, coffee cart, breakfast, lunch, massages, gift cards and more. Thank you once again for your generosity.

AP Proctoring Sign Up Link

There will be two options for mandatory proctor training, anyone who proctors an exam is required to attend the trainings. The two options are Monday, April 29th @ 5:00pm and Tuesday, April 30th @ 7:00am. If neither one of these options work for you please reach out to Cameron Browne, cameron_browne@dpsk12.net, and we can work something out.

Eligibility Criteria:

The following criteria are in place to help ensure that exams are administered properly and to avoid any real or perceived conflict of interest. A conflict of interest may result in score cancellation. The proctor must meet all these criteria:

  • Proctors must be responsible adults; they may not be high school students.
  • Proctors may be educational professionals; AP coordinators; active, retired, or substitute teachers; parents without a conflict of interest; or members of the administrative staff.
  • Current, former, or retired teachers, including AP teachers, may serve as proctors for exams in a subject area other than the one they now teach or have ever taught. This policy also applies to AP coordinators, department heads, and substitute teachers.* For example, a ninth-grade English teacher may not proctor an AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition Exam but could proctor an AP Biology Exam.
  • An individual may not proctor an AP Exam or handle materials for an exam in the year in which an immediate family or household member may be taking that exam. Immediate family includes one’s parents, siblings, children, grandparents, and spouse. This applies even if they don’t reside in the same household.
  • Proctors may not take any AP Exam or review in any manner the content of the exam.
  • Proctors may not be employed part or full time at a test preparation company.
  • Proctors may not participate in any coaching activity that addresses the content of secure College Board tests.

Congratulations, Robotics, on an amazing season!

Led by team captains, seniors Hailey Sine and Dresden Friar, the Angelbotics team had a successful season!  First, at the Utah Regional, Angelbotics recovered from mechanical issues to win, earning a place at the World Championships in Houston.  Then, at the Colorado Regional, Angelbotics came from way behind and won!  The Anglebotics rookie team also earned a wildcard ticket to Worlds through the Rookie All-Star Award!  Last week in Houston, Angelbotics was one of 32 teams (out of their division’s 75) to advance to the semifinals, where their season’s run came to an end. More important than the scoreboard, Angelbotics twice won the Gracious Professionalism Award, recognizing the time and expertise the Service Angels provide other teams. Let’s hear it for our talented, big-hearted robotics teams!

Greetings Class of 2025!

Your students are on the threshold of their senior year, and believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about After Prom 2025! After Prom is an East legacy, carried on by East senior parents for over 30 years. This tradition is steeped in our community. After Prom provides a safe, inclusive, and FREE event for all seniors keeping them off the streets and engaged in activities after the dance. It runs from 11:30 – 3:00 am and it takes a lot of planning and volunteer hours to make it happen. It is amazing, worth it, and a gift your students will relish as a bookend to their time at East.

It has been a tradition for the junior parents to help with two important things: watch over the decorated spaces at East the night of the event while Senior parents go take photos for Prom & then Sunday morning to help clean up and store props from After Prom the next day. (The senior parents and East community thank you from the bottom of our hearts!) Please get involved today by volunteering your time on Saturday, May 4 and or Sunday, May 5.

Please sign up here to help set up & clean up After Prom: Sat, May 4 & Sun, May 5!

The Co-Chair of Juniors is Amy DeCamillis her contact info is: amydecamillis113@gmail.com. Please sign up on the SUG or reach out to Amy to get involved.
