Counseling Department

Mission Statement

As counselors, we are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of individual differences, acquire the educational, occupational and social competencies directed by the mission and philosophy of the Colorado Department of Education, Denver Public School District and of Denver East High School. Developmental by design, systematic in approach, and preventative in nature best describes the foundation of our counseling department mission. The ultimate objective is to facilitate the developmental process that strengthens each students’ unique capabilities, responds to students’ individual academic needs, fosters personal and social growth and promotes post-secondary pathways.

The information is designed to help support students and parents through the high school years and prepare students for college and career success. East counselors provide support to students and their families in three major areas:

  • Personal/Social Development
  • Academic Advisement
  • Career/Post-Secondary Planning

Life After East

Life After East (“LAE”) is a volunteer-run program that, in conjunction with the East Counseling
Department, helps East juniors and seniors evaluate their college and career options. By working
one-on-one with a trained adult volunteer, LAE provides targeted assistance with the college
exploration and application process, including college essays, school lists and scholarship
applications as well as consideration of non-college options. LAE focuses on students who are first-
generation as well as students who for any reason do not have the resources to effectively manage
and research options for their time after graduating from East.

To learn more about what LAE does, you can watch this video. If you are interested in signing up to
work with an LAE counselor, please fill out this form with your parent or guardian. If you have
questions, Steve Kohuth (skohuth@dpsk12.net) is the East Counselor working with LAE.
