Advisement Attendance

Advisement is a class every student at East High School takes, which meets once a week. We cover a range of essential information and complete some tasks that are DPS graduation requirements. The grades for advisement are pass/fail determined by students attendance. These grades do show up on students’ transcript. In order to pass Advisement, students need to attend 80% or more of class. We hope you will encourage your students to attend and engage in this class.

Counseling Update

October 17th Free App Day – All day (except lunch) in the commons: The counseling team would like to invite all of our senior students to the Colorado Free App Day at East on October 17th.  On this day (and through the 19th), the majority of Colorado colleges and universities will be allowing students to submit their admission application for FREE. This is a big deal and we want as many students to participate as possible.  Parents/guardians, please remind your students to take advantage of the free college app days. The link to access the free applications is HERE.

First Generation College Students:

Will your senior student be a first generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4 year degree in the US)? Please have your student see Mrs. Hyosaka if they haven’t received their first generation college passport. This is an opportunity for them to receive additional support through the college and financial application process as well as earn cords to wear at graduation. If you or your student have questions through this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Hyosak at holly_hyosaka@dpsk12.net.

Spring 2024 Concurrent Enrollment Information Session for Students:

Counseling Office during lunch on October 19th

Students who are interested in taking classes at a local community college, technical school, or Metro State University are required to attend this informational lunch session. Students will learn what concurrent enrollment is, how to sign up, and the requirements to be a CE student this spring. If your student cannot make the meeting, please have them email Lindsey_Vesceri@dpsk12.net.

Seal of Biliteracy:

Seal of Biliteracy The DPS Seal of Biliteracy is a nationally recognized award that can be earned by 11th or 12th grade students who can read, speak, listen, and write at a high level in English as well as another level. It is a prestigious award, included on student transcripts, that signals to colleges and employers that a student has attained college-level biliteracy in two or more languages. For more information visit mle.dpsk12.org/seal-of-biliteracy. In order to apply for the Seal of Biliteracy, students should fill out the form in this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfyYMChnqP6nO8Dr38V4NdfoWqu8OqTdFhQOWkKFOCnlUz0og/viewform

Get involved with PTSA

Hello Senior Families, It’s time to start planning After Prom May 2024!

We urgently need volunteers from our Senior families for the 2–3-person Co-Chair Team.

Year after year, it’s an East High School tradition for Senior parents to form incredible teams to create an amazing, SAFE and substance-free Experience of the Year for our Seniors to celebrate together in the wee hours “After Prom.”

As you can see from the links below, there have been so many dedicated people in our community and there are so many ways for you to now get involved in this creative energy and process!

Last year’s After Prom Co-Chairs Blythe Kingsbury and Emily Bovard, along with their strong and dedicated team, are ready to pass the baton, share their organized details and information, and help set up the new After Prom 2024 Team for success! Please reach out as soon as possible to Blythe at rbkingsbury5@gmail.com

You can also contact the East PTSA officers, Mina Goldstein and Veronica Ware, by emailing president@eastptsa.org or calling/texting the numbers below to get connected with After Prom. As you know, Mina, Veronica, and Gretchen Hammer, the PTSA Treasurer, are here to support the After Prom Team.

Some committee volunteers are already in place, but we need a team of 2-3 Co-Chairs and some other key leaders like AP Treasurer. The Senior Class also immediately needs your help and connections for finding a free or low-cost commercial real estate space for the making of After Prom before the big night, as last year’s space in the vacant Cherry Creek Bed Bath and Beyond is no longer available. The planning period for the party starts very soon and meetings could start occurring in November, with the bulk of work/creating taking place after January through the Spring.

After Prom is a legendary party, safe and substance free, taking place inside a magically transformed East High School so our Senior Class can celebrate together! It’s a school-sanctioned event, and it’s FREE of charge for all Seniors with or without a date, and whether they attend the Prom or not. It is managed and funded 100% by Senior Class families. WE NEED YOUR HELP to make this event a success and an unforgettable part of our kids’ high school experience! Please pass along this message and reach out this weekend or very soon.

Thank you to all the East families and community members who have created this INCREDIBLE tradition and event!

Volunteers

Please remember, all volunteers need to complete a background check prior to volunteering within the school and classroom. We will not have regular classes on testing days in order to provide an appropriate testing environment.

The test is completely digital this year and will be taken on school issued chromebooks. Click here to learn more about the digital testing experience.

Parents may opt their student out of testing by following the directions at this link in English or this link in Spanish.

HOW SICK IS TOO SICK?

There are three main reasons for children to stay/go home:

1. The child could infect others with a contagious illness, either because of symptoms, a diagnosis, or recent exposure to a contagious illness (COVID, Cold, Flu, RSV, Strep, chickenpox, GI issues, measles, etc)

2. The child member does not feel well enough to take part in usual activities. For example, a child is overly tired, intense head/stomach ache, fever, chills, or vomiting.

3. A child needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.

When to seek emergency medical attention

● Trouble breathing

● Persistent pain or pressure in the chest

● Confusion

● Inability to wake or stay awake

● Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone

These are not all possible indications of a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 or your healthcare provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.

Flu vaccines are available for DPS students only.

Each student will need an appointment and a current consent for the Denver Health School  Based Clinic. DenverHealth.org/services/school-based-health-centers/e-consent

School-Based will not be offering the COVID vaccine to DH employees, DPS staff, parents or  community. Feel free to visit your PCP, Public Health, Walgreens, etc., for your COVID  vaccine.
