Esports Team Makes History with State Championship Win

East High School’s esports team has made history by securing their first state championship in their inaugural year of competition. On December 10, seniors Austin Green and Jacob Malek, along with freshman Will Turner, clinched the Rocket League title with a last-minute goal against Valor Christian.

Principal Terita Walker highlighted the team’s evolution from a student-organized video gaming club to a competitive team boasting over 40 members. The esports program has received overwhelming support from the East community, with donations of gaming consoles and supplies pouring in following a call in the school’s weekly newsletter.

Esports is gaining traction within Denver Public Schools, with 18 high schools, four middle schools, and 17 elementary schools actively participating. The sport is sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association, reflecting its growing legitimacy and appeal among students.

Team member Austin Green emphasized the inclusive nature of esports at East, noting that students from various backgrounds, including athletes from traditional sports, are engaging in video games.
